La Isla de la Juventud - The Treasure Island

The Island of Youth: An island with many names and and eventful history. Called 'La Evangelista’ by the discoverer Columbus, the island was later called the ‘Devil's Island’. The current name of the island is ‘Isla de la Juventud’ (Island of Youth), also called the ‘Treasure Island’ after the famous writer Robert Louis Stevenson, who wrote his book ‘The Treasure Island’ here. Located in the Caribbean in the south of Cuba, between Cuba and Mexico, this island was discovered by Christopher Columbus during his second trip to America in 1494. For centuries, the island was an important hub for English (Sir Francis Drake) and French pirates. They waited for the Spanish who were overloaded with gold and silver from South America, making their way to Havana. On their way through the Gulf of Mexico, they passed by the Isla de los Pinos (former name). Here you can still find indications of hidden treasures, gold coins and other treasures as well as wrecks from the captured galleons.

An island for adventurers...

Overview

Isla de la Juventud

Like all the islands south of Cuba, the Isla de la Juventud belongs to the Canarreos coral archipelago. It consists of 672 islands and islets and is the second largest coral reef in the world. The archipelago stretches from Honduras to Cuba and to the Bahamas and is home to heavenly coral islands of incomparable beauty. Here you can also find the Isla de la Juventud with a total area of 2,199 square kilometers and its famous underwater reefs.

Travel Details

Arrival and Diving on the Treasure Island

The island can be approached from Havana daily. A crossing with a ferry is also possible, although only on specific days and in case the ferry is approved for crossing. With our program La Ruta de Los Indios, the Treasure Island can be approached by our diving ship.

From this place there are daily Cuban domestic flights to Nueva Gerona/Isla de la Juventud airport. If you arrive on the island from an inital starting point inside of Cuba, you have to have an overnight stay in a hotel in Havana before leaving for your destination and after coming back due to aeronautical reasons. There are 2 daily flights from/to Havana. You will be welcomed at the airport in Gerona by a member of our staff. After that you will be transported across the entire island in a minivan from Gerona to the Hotel Colony in about 50 minutes. After arriving at the hotel, you check in and receive information about the hotel and the diving facilities. Shortly after, the guests will also be informed about the next day, which includes a diving trip. Our guests are accommodated in new bungalows (partly two-storied) without exception. Every morning after breakfast at 9 am, we drive to the nearby port in a minivan. From Port Colony we then take the waiting submersibles (capacity 12-18 people) across the gulf to ‘Punta Frances’, which is located about 18 nautical miles away.

Note: On domestic flights in Cuba, a general excess baggage fee of 20-80 CUC has to be paid for the diving luggage.

Diving on the Isla de la Juventud

Diving is written with a capital D on the Isla de la Juventud, that’s why the international diving center connected to the Hotel El Colony was expanded to become one of the biggest diving bases in the Caribbean years ago. With an own Marina, an own decoration chamber, multiple diving ships and 200 compressed air scubas it also is the second-largest diving base in Cuba after the one in Varadero. With the countless mazes, endlessly dropping gigantic steep coral walls, huge fish swarms, multiple wrecks and spectacular encounters with large fish every diver can find unforgettable diving spots here.

Hotel El Colony on La Isla de la Juventud

Hotel El Colony: In the southwestern part of the Isla de la Juventud, about 46 km away from the island’s capital Nueva Gerona, is where you can find the Hotel Colony. The hotel complex consists of an old, now partly derelict, two-storied hotel wing with 53 rooms. This older part of the hotel complex was already built in 1958, before the revolution, and is supposed to be refurbished completely very soon. Due to the Caribbean-Cuban pace, this will sadly still probably have to take a while.

Bungalow Complex Colony: Our guests are living in the 24 surrounding modernized bungalows, which are partly two-storied and located in a park.

Diving - Isla de la Juventud

The diving center El Colony is directly affiliated to the diving resort El Colony and has its own marina with several spacious diving boats for 12 to 18 divers. In the marina there is also the compressor filling-station, an equipment and utility room for small repairs, as well as a charging station for diving lamps (220 V). The 12 liter steel and aluminum diving bottles have DIN/INT connector. The diving equipment can be rented only with an advanced registration and is to be paid directly at the base. In the equipment room, you can safely store your diving equipment during your stay and dry it after the dives.

Diving on the Isla de la Juventud – The Treasure Island

The coral reefs are already starting at the shoreline; the most beautiful diving reefs are between 15 and 18 meters deep, very nice dive sites and many underwater caves on the steep drop downs, which draw up to 400 meters deep on this second largest coral reef in the world. The Canarreos reef is characterized by giant coral and gorgonian formations, of which more than 150 species were counted in front of the Isla de la Juventud alone. A huge population of tropical fish with almost 600 species can be found here. The guides of the ‘diving base colony’ have previously set 56 dive sites around the ‘Punta Frances’, so you can experience new interesting dive sites here again and again.

As early as 1980, the diving grounds of the Isla de la Juventud were declared a nature reserve and marine Park. Despite the fierce storms of the last few years, the coral reefs have recovered quickly. Compliance of the diving regulations is to be strictly respected and monitored here. The diving areas are therefore particularly well preserved. In the past few years, the diving company has restricted the diving for various reasons which brought very few divers to the area. This led to a natural recovery of the sea grounds of the Isla de la Juventud and as a result, a great variety of large fish has returned to this area.

The most beautiful dive sites
