Travel Details

Program and route:

1st day: Arrival

Individual arrival from the airport or other sites of Cuba.
Optional: Transfer from the airport or from other sites to the hotel / or private accommodation in Havana or other services.

Accommodation: Hotel Copacabana or equivalent / or private accommodation.

2nd day: Havana

Today you get to know Havana in all its glory. You will be struck by the magic and air of the city. The atmosphere is affected by all the pompous constructions of the Spanish architecture and the American vintage cars from the 50s.
After the breakfast in your hotel you will start the city tour of Havana with the fortress nicknamed „El Morro“. „La Fortaleza de los Tres Reyes de Morro“ was built in 1563 out of huge blocks of coral rock. The 24m tall lighthouse was built in 1844 and is still being used. The 60 cannons, among them the „12 apostles“, are directed towards the sea and convey the original role of the fortress.

The city tour continues in the old city of Havana, La Habana Vieja. It was listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site in 1982. On the „Plaza de la Catedral“ you can admire the gorgeous front of the cathedral of Havana, which is one of the most beautiful baroque churches in Latin America. The decorated altar is made of Carrera and Onyx marble. Around the church you can find lively goings-on. The Cubans offer carvings, paintings and other interesting souvenirs for sale. Closeby, the famous bar „La Bodeguita del Medio“ is situated, which opened in 1942; Ernest Hemingay used to drink Mojitos here. Signatures and graffities of famous presidents and artists adorn the walls of this cultic bar.

The tour leads you to the oldest square in the city - „La Plaza de Armas“, also called „Plaza Céspedes“ after Carlos Manuel Céspedes, whose statue you can see in the middle of the square. There’s also an old kapok tree, where the fair for the founding of the town was held in 1519. The city tour through La Habana Vieja also leads you on the „Calle de los Oficios“ to the „Plaza de San Francisco de Asís“. From here you will make a detour to the rum museum, since Cuba and rum simply belong together. Afterwards, you will stroll on the „Plaza Vieja“ to the hotel „Ambos Mundos“ in the street Calle Obispo 153. This is where Ernest Hemingway lived from 1932 up until 1940. The room no. 511 was left in its original state in memory of the author. You can see his typewriter, a model of his boat „Pilar“ and a whiskey bottle emptied by Hemingway himself. Panorama tour along the old city with following sightseeings: „Parque Central“, „Gran Teatro de La Habana“ and the „Capitolio Nacional“.
You will have lunch at a local restaurant. After this you will continue the tour in the modern part of Havana and visit the „Plaza de la Revolución“, where you can find the Cuban seat of government and several ministries. In the end you will visit the 1728 built University of Havana and a cigar shop in the hotel TRYP Habana Libre.

You will then return to your hotel and have dinner at the hotel. Leisure time after dinner.

Or return to your private accommodation.

Accommodation: Hotel Copacabana or equivalent / or private accommodation.

3rd day: Havana - Viñales - Havana

After breakfast you will leave for Pinar del Rio in the western part of Cuba, an area with great landscapes. The best tobacco in the world grows here. The sleepy province capital Pinar del Rio is affected by the low, pink, green and blue houses and fills the visitors with peace. You will visit the cigar factory „Francisco Donatén Vegueros“. Stopover at the farm „El Paraíso“ to get to know the kindness and hospitality of the farmers in Viñales. The area around Pinar del Rio is full of palm trees, you will never find this many anywhere else in Cuba. The scent of tobacco plantations lies in the atmosphere. Wide, thick pine tree forests and ranges determine the nature of these surroundings. In the valley of Viñales, close to Pinar del Rio, you can marvel at the monumental rock painting „Mural de la Prehistoria“ and the cave „Cueva del Indio“ with its subterranean rivers, where you will take a cruise past interesting rock formations. On your way you will make a stop at the lookout „Los Jazmines“ to see the amazing, beautiful view of the valley of Viñales. Lunch at a local restaurant and return to Havana. Leisure time and dinner in the hotel. Private accommodation without dinner.

Accommodation: Hotel Copacabana or equivalent / or private accommodation.

4th day: Havana - Guamá - Cienfuegos - Trinidad

After breakfast departure for the „Zapata“ national park. On the way you will visit the typical Cuban farm „Fiesta Campesina“. The peninsula „Zapata“ is a wide, almost uninhabited area with about 300.000ha wildland, 40.000ha swampland and 2.255ha forest. Crocodiles live here, as well as various birds and lake animals. Closeby you will visit a crocodile farm with about 40.000 reptiles.
The lunch will be taken in a local restaurant. The tour now heads to Cienfuegos. The city built in 1819 is situated in a lovely bay and is the most important commerical centre in Central Cuba. Enjoy a stroll around this beautiful city. „Parque José Martí“ is the centre of the city with its ornamental shrubs, iron lights and shadowy palm trees. The theatre „Tomás Terry“ was inaugurated in 1895 while playing the Italian opera „Aida“. The glorious building, big enough for 920 guests, impresses with its three-story balconies and loges made of hand-painted pine wood, and also the interiors decorated with carved mahogany. Next to the „Casa de Bienes Culturales“ you can see the „La Purísima Concepción“ cathedral. The church built in 1870 has 12 huge windows which symbolise the 12 apostles. Another highlight is the „Palacio del Valle“, today a Museum of Decorative Arts and built in 20th century. Your day will end in Trinidad, where you will have dinner and spend the night.

Accommodation: Hotel La Ronda (or similar) with dinner or private accommodation.

5th day: Trinidad

After breakfast you will leave for the valley with sugar factories. Around 50 sugar factories bloomed in this area in the 18th century. Today there are only a few ruins and remains left of them. Here you can also find the tower „Manaca Iznaga“, built in 1816, from which the slaves were being watched back in the day. The bell used to announce the start and end of a working day.
Afterwards, you will experience Trinidad, one of the best maintained colonial cities on the American continent. The city was founded in 1514 and was the main spot for slave trade, the sugar industry and was also an influential cultural centre. Enjoy the city roundtrip past red rooftops, historical manors and artistic balconies. The time seems to have stopped here. The city is part of the world cultural heritage wit its cobbled roads and antique colonial-style buildings. You will visit the central square „Plaza Mayor“, surrounded by many historical buildings. In the „Parroquial Mayor de la Santísima Trinidad“ church you can find a famous Christ statue made of wood and an altar made of mahogany. Also, visit of one of Trinidad’s museums. Stopover at the Cuban bar „La Canchanchara“. Lunch at a local restaurant and return to hotel / or private accommodation. Leisure time.

Accommodation: Hotel La Ronda (or similar) with dinner or private accommodation.

6th day: Trinidad - Santa Clara - Varadero/Havana

After breakfast you will leave for Santa Clara, where you will see the mausoleum and tomb of Che Guevara. City tour of Santa Clara and lunch at a local restaurant. Afterwards, you will head to Varadero.

End of roundtrip.
