Bird Watching "Cuba´s Bird World"

Bird Watching "Cuba´s Bird World": This hiking trip makes the hearts of lovers of bird watching beat faster.

Crane, ibis, flamingo, Cuban parrot, Tocororo and a lot more...

Bird Watching "Cuba´s Bird World"

Havana, Cuba’s exciting capital city, will be one of the main bases for your tour and will in itself be one of the highlights. From Havana, you will go an excursion to the famous National Park La Güira, a mecca of typical Cuban flora and fauna before also visiting the stunning diversity of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Sierra del Rosario, another breathtaking display of Tropical biodiversity. You will then head to the Zapata Peninsula, whose landscape has been compared to the Everglades in Florida. This vast and partly unexplored area is a haven for birdwatching in Cuba. Besides crocodiles, dugongs and needlefish it hosts a vast array of birds such as cranes, ibises, flamingos, and the "Cuban Amazon", also known as the Cuban Parrot - a near-threatened species of great beauty and colour.

Cuba´s national bird – the tocororo

Cuba’s national bird, the 'tocororo' (also called the 'Cuban Trogon') is a real eye-catcher, and is recognisable by its characteristic song. On our birdwatching in Cuba tour you are guaranteed to encounter this special bird at least once. The name 'tocororo' is an onomatopoeic name based on the sound of its song. The colours of this special bird represent those of the Cuban flag, but this is not the only reason why it is considered the national bird; it also dances and sings like a real Cuban! When the tocororo sings it also moves its body up and down in a rhythmic dance. A further reason for the tocororo being the national bird is that it cannot live in captivity and therefore has become a symbol of the Cuban desire for freedom. The tocororo is a real highlight on the birdwatching in Cuba tour and one of the favourite photo moments.

Las Terrazas
The community Las Terrazas is a stunning ecotourism center located in the Sierra del Rosario mountain range and is a perfect spot for birdwatching in Cuba. While in Las Terrazas you should not miss out on the chance to swim in the natural pool of the river Rio San Juan. For those who are looking for something more exciting and stimulating we would recommend the Canopy Tour. Moving above the trees, like a bird yourself, you will see Cuba’s bird world up close. Las Terrazas, which was designated as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, is a stunning place of wild beauty where inhabitants, tourists and wildlife become one. After our adventure here we will enjoy a meal in a typical Cuban restaurant, which is managed by locals, after which you will start the journey back to the town of Soroa.

Ciénaga de Zapata National Park
The Zapata Peninsula with its vast mangrove and marsh territories is probably the richest destination for bird-watching in Cuba. The peninsula has been designated a Cuban National Park due to its numerous migratory birds, rare resident waterfowl, endemic reptiles and wide variety of ecosystems. Seventy percent of Cuba’s bird species can be spotted in this region and one of the highlights among them is the Grey-fronted Quail-Dove that is endemic to Cuba and the Dominican Republic. This rare and threatened species enjoys the perfect conditions for surviving in the enthusiastically protected biosphere reserve of Ciénaga de Zapata. In the lagoon of Las Salinas, known for its concentration of migratory birds, large flocks of bright-coloured flamingoes can also be observed. This ecologically significant wetland of Cuba has also received the prestigious title of a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.
